Tonight I listened to Martin Luther King’s I Have a Dream speech on NPR on my way home from Dallas. Admittedly, I cannot remember in my recent past a time that I have sat down to listen to the speech in its entirety. While listening, it made me reflect on what the speech stood for in 1963 and what the speech means for me today.

It seems so surreal to me that less than fifty short years ago segregation was prevalent and “free” Americans had to rally for their right to be treated equally. My parents were children while this was happening in our world. It’s a shame, for our country stands for so many wonderful things. Yet, in today’s world, many Americans still fight for civil rights. Homosexuals fight for their rights to be treated equal, and for this I feel like our country still has so far to go. It makes me wonder, what will the state of the nation be like in 50 years? What is the change you would like to see?
