Summer Coworking Tour, Second Installment

Conjunctured

Members and visitors can post projects and availability on the white board at Conjunctured.

I first heard about Conjunctured (@conjunctured) at SXSWi this year. I sat in on a panel that co-founder John Erik Metcalf (@johnerik) hosted, and immediately looked up this Austin coworking spot. And was hooked. Fast forward a few months and I was on the front step of Conjunctured ready to see it for myself.

Conjunctured

Travis and I were in Austin this weekend for a wedding shower and decided to stop by on the off-chance that someone might be there. If not, we just wanted to snoop around. Thank goodness for David Walker (@davidhwalker), another co-founder, because he happened to be there and welcomed us in.

Conjunctured offers coffee, espresso, snacks, and the occasional whiskey drink (while supplies last) to those working at Conjunctured.

Again, just like at Caroline Collective, I was so thrilled at David’s warm welcome and willingness to give us a tour and answer our questions about his (and the rest of the partners) experience opening up the space. He had a lot of great advice and insight as to what it takes to run a coworking space.

Conjunctured

Conjunctured really does revolve around the idea of community, with only coworking spaces (no private offices) available. Members leave monitors for those in need to use while working, an iPod playlist constantly streams throughout the space for anyone to be an impromptu DJ, and a whiteboard displays projects, needs, and prospects for those working in the space. It was great to see Conjunctured in person, and it serves as a great model for opening up a coworking community and space in Fort Worth.

David’s #1 advice: community before space. Build it, they might come. However, if you participate in and help create a coworking community that has significant interest in the space, that’s the best time to start. Thus, next steps are in the works and Jelly is the name of the game.

Thanks again, David, for your time and knowledge!

Summer Coworking Tour, First Installment

It’s hard to believe it’s been (almost) two weeks since I resigned from my job. I worked in the interactive department at Concussion in Fort Worth, TX. I enjoyed what I did and learned an immense amount throughout the course of my employment there. From social media to DNN (don’t get too impressed-not the actual coding, but more of a “knowledge”), online media buying to SEO, I’ve got a lot of experience that I am forever grateful.

But something in me wasn’t fully content and knew I wanted to do something else with my life. Enter coworking. I first learned about coworking at SXSWi when I heard people speak about Conjunctured in Austin, TX and Citizen Space in San Fran. What a concept! I was hooked.

Thus, I’ve dived in head first doing research, emailing, tweeting, talking to whoever I can to get my head around this social movement. My first stop: Caroline Collective in Houston, TX.

I stopped by and spoke with Paul Tucker, office manager and Ned Dodington, co-founder about their experiences, as well as for tips on night life in Houston while I was there. :) They were both candid and generous with their advice and I left feeling inspired.

Caroline Collective is the first coworking space in Houston and just celebrated their one year anniversary at the beginning of this month. It’s a great, expansive space with several private offices, coworking rooms, and ample room for events. Not to mention a fantastic zebra in the courtyard. (I kick myself for not getting a picture)! Several non-profits are housed at CC, as well as several others who work in PR, social media, marketing, and even engineering!

I left with invaluable insight and am so happy I stopped by. One thing I have been surprised by in my research is the overwhelming generosity of those in the coworking community. Places like New Work City, Company | Dallas, Cubes & Crayons and more have reached out and their willingness to help has been astounding. It’s a true testament to the concept.
