Things that give me joy, one discovery at a time.

Billy Ballin’ Out of Control

I apologize for the cheesey title.

Mrs. Ashley Paz and I (@veragreen) are brainstorming ideas for the event design for a wedding in May of next year. It’ll be a beautiful fete, inspired by yellows, purples, and succulents. I’d have to say we’re currently obsessed with Billy Balls. Here’s a very simple inspiration board (courtesy of Style Me Pretty’s excellent resource, Style Circle) that I pulled together today.

Wall of Fame

I’ve recently become obsessed with decorating. You see, Mr. Essl bought a lovely old home at the beginning of this year (built in 1941) and since moving in there has really been no decorating efforts. Bit by bit we add things, a dining room table here, some curtains there. But in an attempt to not blow the budget these days, it’s all moving rather slowly. But I’ve got an itch! I’m ready to make this house a home.

While perusing the internets this evening I stumbled upon a great flickr collection of old Domino publications full of inspiration. Right now I’m hooked on all of the different ways they’ve decked the walls. Prints, paintings, photographs. Check out these great images.

You Must Be a Redneck if… You Attend Chanel at Paris Fashion Week?

Have you guys seen this?? It must have been a once in a lifetime experience. The fashion powerhouse known as Chanel turned its show into a regular barnyard romp equipped with hay, a concert by Lily Allen, and Karl Lagerfeld himself.

Friday Favorites

Oliver Peoples

Oliver Peoples

Forget Ray-Ban and the Wayfarer (even though I love my pair that has lasted me a good 2+ years…a miracle for me) I’m loving Oliver People’s shades. From the Sheldrake up top to the Zooey below (named after the precious Zooey Deschanel) I’m desiring a pair in every color.

The amazing pop remeniscent art of Daniel Blagg, who’s featured at Artspace111 in Fort Worth these days.

Lots of 2010 calendars being released lately, and I dig these letterpress calendars made of 100% recycled material from YeeHaw on etsy.

This lamb’s wool cowl. Makes me pine for cold weather!

Anna & Viviana’s outfits. And Eva’s.

And Whorange’s post on Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which features this video:

Happiness Delivered

I believe that there is something so special about getting something in the mail, especially a surprise. Today I got the most precious card from one of my oldest, dearest friends who lives in Chicago. Obviously, because of the greeting, she knows me very well.

La Familia Green

After reading her card I did a little investigating into the company that made the card, and I must say, it’s quite neat! La Familia Green, located in Chicago, makes handmade journals and stationery all the while being an eco-friendly company (I like) and donating proceeds of sales to no-kill shelters in Chicago (I love). So check them out! And, I encourage everyone to send a card or two to a friend, a family member, or someone you lost touch with. You’ll make their day!

Etsy Spotlight: Blissful Images

While tinkering around on Oh So Beautiful Paper this morning, I came across a guest blog post by the author of Unruly Things that included the most whimsically beautiful photo of a bicycle in a field. I immediately clicked on the photo. Must. know. who. did. this.

Answer: Blissful Images (her blog), or Mrs. French on Flickr.

Her images are so soft and pretty. Some almost eerie. But nonetheless, I absolutely love her aesthetic.

I won’t do much writing here, I’ll let these photos speak for themselves.

The greatest part about stumbling upon Blissful Images this morning is that she has an Etsy shop! Huzzah! So not only can you look at her pretties online, but you can buy one and display it in your own home, as well. You can even get the print in three different sizes: 5×7, 8×10, or 16×24. The photo above, titled fire food, is an example of one of the prints you can purchase in her shop.  I hope these photos warm your day. They made me smile, that’s for sure.

Etsy Spotlight: Anna Routh

Every once in awhile I will be featuring some of my favorite Etsy sellers that I’ve had a great experience with or that I just plain really like their shop. To kick this off, I’m going to start with a dear friend of mine, Anna Routh. I’ve featured her work on blue eye brown eye before, but I wanted to spotlight it here for you all to see her amazing talent.

Olive Olive and painting

For Travis’s birthday this year I had Anna paint a portrait of Olive, which turned out so well. I couldn’t be happier! It sits nicely on our mantel, and gets so much attention from our visitors!

Anna Routh Etsy

To get a portrait, all you have to do is send your favorite picture of your pet to Anna and she’ll create a custom oil painting just for you. She can do it on a variety of sizes including: 16 x 20, 11 x 14, or 20 x 24. Her work is so unique, and a painting like this would make an excellent gift or centerpiece for any wall in your house.

Anna Routh Etsy

And I know what you’re thinking, “Can she paint my cat, also??” You bet! This girl can do it all.

Discount alert!

As a special treat for all of you 10 or so blue eye brown eye readers, Anna is giving a 10% discount in her etsy shop. Just write “blue eye brown eye” in your message to the seller and Anna will refund via PayPal.

Kansas City

This week Olive, Terri (that’s mi madre), and I took a quick impromptu trip up to Kansas City to see my favorite aunt, eat at Lidia’s, and visit Hammerpress, my most recent obsession. While there, we went to this amazing antique mall with prices that were so reasonable it was insane! After 2 hours and three floors, we completed our trip with 8 cake stands for the wedding amongst other fun trinkets in tow. Here’s a sampling of some of the knick knacks I bought while there.

Antique Store finds

Birds, yes, birds. I cannot stop looking at this little orange glass gem with the bird on top. So sweet and precious. And it was only $15! I’ve decided I’m going to start a collection of small kitschy dogs to put in this really narrow bookcase in our house. Pictured here are Toto and Harper Lee (named after Heather’s dachshund). They’re the start of my collection.

Antique finds

Isn’t this little condiment dish fab?? It’s so art deco/century modern. Can’t wait to put peanuts or olives in it. Or something.

vintage nightgown

This is the detail on a nightgown I bought that is so dainty and beautiful. Best part about it? Only $12!

Hammerpress

And then there’s Hammerpress. ::sigh:: Hammerpress is the example of a shop I would die to run someday in my life. Since I found out today that my letterpress has been cancelled, this dream of mine will be delayed a little longer. But that’s ok! When I have people like Hammerpress around to dream about, life is good.

Hammerpress

I had an appointment with a precious young man named Matt at Hammerpress where we went through their portfolio, talked about our wedding, and came up with a layout for our invites and save the dates. The craftsmanship and design that Hammerpress puts out is in.cred.ible. I’ve seen nothing like it anywhere else. Needless to say, I cannot wait to see what kind of comps they come up with for Travis and me for our wedding.

Hammerpress

I did a little shopping while at Hammerpress, as well, and snagged some great posters and prints to hang around the house. I’m in love with this alphabet poster with it’s great typography and intense color.

Hammerpress

I got the MERDE print for Trav. Isn’t it wonderful? Love. Love. Love.

The trip to KC was fun and productive, and we left with a ton of fun loot to prove it. Hooray for home decor!
